In 2013 online poker was legalized in Delaware, Nevada and New Jersey. Delaware is one of the very few states where players are eligible to do sports betting. This is due to the increase in revenue the state will receive throughout the year. In conjunction with this, players are now able to play online poker games from home.

Why the Legalization of Online Poker?

Taking one of the oldest forms of entertainment and thinking about it, you would almost feel like there would be some kind of seniority or special treatment However, for the most part gambling has been frowned upon and then praised throughout time. Many states and the United States as a nation has gone back and forth when it comes to what should be legal and what shouldn’t be legal. Within the last few years, many states started to allow gaming casinos which were never allowed in some regions. As for online gaming; it seems as though the idea has always been vetoed until now.

In 2005, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was signed into law. This act (also called the UIGEA) prohibited players from using their debit or credit card accounts to make transactions with online casinos. In some places, the bill was outlined in a way which players were not able to play online at all which was entirely untrue. Major poker sites were taken offline, offices were raided and players were left stranded without payments. The whole online gaming industry was turned upside down. The first sign of things coming together was in 2011 when the UIGEA was lifted, players were then able to use their credit cards to process online casino transactions.

The two states which raise questions are New Jersey and Nevada. Some may wonder why these states would even allow online gaming as it seems as though it would take away from the land based casinos. Through research, the companies have learned with the gaming options available, there are still players who prefer internet gambling over the land based gambling any day. The state of Nevada also found that they would be receiving more then 4 billion in additional revenue per year. New Jersey then followed in Nevada’s footsteps soon after as the two states have always been in competition with each other in terms of gaming strategies.

Nevada is the first state to actually have an online poker room up and running. The online poker rooms will be privately owned but will be regulated by the state. Nevada’s online poker room is owned by two brothers who manage station casinos as well as the UFC. Most of the owners for these online poker rooms will have some kind of dealing with a casino; many of the casino giants such as Caesar’s Entertainment group are actively seeking their licensing to operate an online poker room as well. This will help the brands round out their portfolio for gaming.
